Argentine justice has requested Interpol to detain 61 Bolsonaro supporters who are fugitives from Brazilian justice. These individuals are involved in a rebellion against several government agencies in Brazil in January 2023. The uprising took place on January 8, 2023, at the beginning of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's term, who had defeated then-president Jair Bolsonaro in the elections.
The request for the detention of the fugitives comes just before the first meeting between Argentine President Javier Milei and his Brazilian counterpart at the G20 summit, which will be held next week in Rio de Janeiro. A month ago, Brazil's Supreme Court requested Argentina to extradite the fugitives, and now Judge Rafecas has requested their detention, following the dossier received from the Foreign Ministry in Buenos Aires.
According to reports, two Brazilian citizens have been arrested in La Plata so far, and operations to locate the other fugitives are expected to continue. These individuals face charges of "attempted coup d'état," as well as other offenses such as "destruction of public property" and "criminal association."
All those involved managed to cross the border into Argentina after the disturbances in Brasília, where they participated in the events at Planalto, the seat of government, and other nearby government agencies. During the disturbances in Brasília, the protesters alleged an alleged electoral fraud that supposedly led to Lula's victory in the elections, and therefore requested the intervention of the Armed Forces to prevent the new president’s assumption.
